As gambling laws are regulated at the state level, only around half of America’s states have formally legalised online gambling . The process began in 2013 when New Jersey led the way for online gambling in the US space. Others, such as Nevada, Delaware, Pennsylvania
Some states have legalised sports betting, but not online casinos, while others have legalised both, but not online poker, for example. Others have gone all-in and legalised all three.
In 2019 and 2020, states such as Indiana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Iowa legalised online sports betting. Michigan legalised online sports betting, online casinos, and online poker in 2021.
With that in mind, here are some of the US States that could be among the most likely to legalise online gambling in 2022.
New York
It may seem surprising that such a cosmopolitan and profitable state has not yet legalised online gambling but, though discussions have taken place, that is the state of play. At the time of writing gambling at online casinos is neither licensed nor specifically prohibited by the federal government. The same is true of online sports betting. However, as it is not prohibited by law, New York residents can play at any of the many licenced and regulated online casinos that accept US players .
The state has a significant legal gambling offering, including 30+ land-based casinos, a state lottery, charitable gambling, poker and racinos but, as yet, there are no licensed online casinos based in New York. Still, with the Covid-19 pandemic precipitating a rise in working from home and a significant increase in the global revenue of online casinos, we expect this to change in 2022.
Maryland
Historically a gambling-friendly state, Maryland legalised online sports betting via Q2 in the 2020 general election. It was formalised by the Maryland General Assembly, after voters approved it via a referendum.
