World Series of Poker Has Interesting Names in Front of Field

The World Series of Poker Main Event final table of nine survivors is set with an interesting 1-2 at the top of the leaderboard.

More formally, the Main Event is the $10,000 No-Limit Hold ‘em World Championship, now in its 52nd renewal. After a year in which the pandemic forced the World Series of Poker into a hybrid online poker -live poker format, it’s back at its familiar recent home at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

The winner gets $8 million with second place earning $4.3 million. The pay schedule slides down incrementally to ninth place at $1 million. Play started with 6,650 entrants.

In first place as play resumes Tuesday, is Koray Aldemir, a veteran international tournament player born in Germany and living in Austria, with more than $12 million in lifetime tournament earnings. American from Atlanta 2nd

Sitting in second place is one of four remaining Americans, George Holmes, currently from Atlanta and originally from New Jersey. Holmes essentially is a home game player with just one listed career tournament cash for almost $51,000.

Holmes finished 213th in the 2019 WSOP Main Event. Holmes was down to the felt at one point on Monday and got back in the running with a last-ditch quintuple-up with his remaining chips, meaning he won a pot with four callers. Even at that, he had just more than a little over 2 million chips but quickly ran it up to 16 million. Incredibly, by the end of play Monday, he was sitting in second place at the Main Event final table.

The other Americans still alive with play resuming in late-afternoon (Eastern Time) are: Joshua Remitio, from Arizona, who reportedly plays in Scottsdale and has just $1,800 in lifetime tournament cashes (fourth); one-time chip leader Hye Park, of Holmdel, New Jersey (seventh), and Chase Bianchi, of Columbia, Md.
