The first state to do so was Nevada. In 2013, they passed legislation allowing for intrastate online poker sites. The next year saw New Jersey legalize intrastate sports betting. However, it wasn’t until 2018 that both states opened up their markets for interstate and international operators as well.
New Jersey was the first state to legalize New Jersey online casinos, but it hasn’t been easy for them. In 2011, New Jersey voters approved a referendum that legalized online gaming within their borders. However, this led to several legal challenges from other states and from the federal government itself. Today, New Jersey is still working on ensuring compliance with existing laws and regulations and finding ways to expand its offering’s appeal beyond its current roster of games (which includes poker).
