Market Monitor: Pennsylvania September 2021

Pennsylvania online poker revenue slipped 8.5% to $2.9 million in September, but it was still the second-highest month for the vertical in 2021, data from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) show.

WSOP PA remained the state’s second-largest poker operator after PokerStars PA , but its revenue and market share slipped to $603k and 20.5%, down from $819k and 25.5% in August.

PokerStars, partnered with the Mount Airy Casino Resort, clawed back a bit of the market share it lost when BetMGM Poker PA and Borgata Poker PA entered the market in April and WSOP followed suit in July.

The lead operator posted $2 million in revenue for September and held 67% of the market, up from $1.9 million and 60% in August.

BetMGM had $271k in revenue while Borgata grossed $94k. Both were down from the $346k and $117k they respectively made the month prior. BetMGM operates under the Hollywood Casino license, while Borgata is partnered with Rivers-Philadelphia. Their market shares for the month were 9.5% and 3%, down from 11% and 3.5%.

While online poker revenue was down, online casino revenue jumped 11% to $94.9 million, the third-highest month on record.

Hollywood and its partner operators— BetMGM Casino PA , DraftKings Casino PA and Penn National/Barstool—grew its revenue to $38.4 million and held 40.5% of the market in September. Rivers came in second with $26.6 million in revenue and 28% of the market, thanks to its partners, BetRivers Casino PA , Borgata Casino PA and PlaySugarHouse PA.

Valley Forge Casino, which is partnered with FanDuel Casino and Stardust iCasino, was a distant third with $15.8 million in revenue and 16.5% of the market.

According to PGCB data, revenue from the seven smaller online casino operators totaled $14.1 million, or 14.9% of the total. That was down slightly from August, when they grossed about $14.3 million in revenue and held more than 16% of the market.Sportsbook revenue surged 86% in September to $40.9 million, up from $22 million.
