$41,000 raised at poker tournament goes to Boys & Girls Club of Carlsbad...Community events north San Diego

The nonprofit La Costa 35 Athletic Club raised more than $41,000 at its 10th Annual Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament, which drew 150 players and benefited the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad. Scott McGhee was awarded the coveted Winners Bracelet and selected a week’s stay in Maui as his prize. Jamie Stout was the runner-up. The Club, which was formed in 1984 to promote friendly competition among Carlsbad residents aged 35 and older, held its first poker tournament in 2011. Since then the event has nearly tripled in attendance and raised nearly $400,000. Senior center offers free walking group

The Carlsbad Senior Center hosts a free weekly walking group, the “Carlsbad Cruisers,” from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays. The group walks in various areas of Carlsbad, such as the village and coast. Wear comfortable shoes, sunscreen and light clothing. Meet at the west entrance of the center, 799 Pine Ave. Dogs, strollers, family and friends are all welcome. Monthly Sunday concerts back at library

The Friends of the Encinitas Library hosts a free concert 2 to 3 p.m. Jan. 2 featuring Jazz pianist Chase Morrin in the community room of the Encinitas Library, 540 Cornish Drive. Morrin and his trio, Max Kraus on Bass and Julien Cantelm on drums, will perform jazz standards along with original compositions. Visit encinitaslibfriends.org.

Gourd and basket artists display work at community center

Nine members of the Misti Washington Gourd and Basket Guild hold a show of 27 artworks that will be on display in the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive through Jan. 5.
