There was much excitement in Florida for October 15, when sports betting would become legal, but that crucial day is here, and no casinos or sportsbooks have launched retail or online sports wagering. The Seminole Tribe is theoretically now able to take bets on its land, but it is not ready for launch yet.
A spokesperson for the Seminole Tribe reportedly stated that the tribe was never actually planning to launch on October 15. There is still lots of work to be done regarding regulations and ironing out legal details despite the official launch occurring today. The Orlando Sentinel reported that there would be at least a one-month delay to launch both online and retail sports betting. Hard Rock Sportsbook Poised to be the First to Launch
In partnership with the Seminole Tribe, Hard Rock Digital is expected to be one of the first brands to bring online sports betting to Florida in addition to retail sports betting at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Hard Rock Digital is run by former online gambling executives for the Stars Group and is developing its own sportsbook product titled Hard Rock Sportsbook using source code from Amelco. Hard Rock Sportsbook hopes to allow you to place sports bets remotely from anywhere in Florida, including at Seminole Casinos. Ongoing Legal Concerns Overshadowing Regulatory Process
There are ongoing questions concerning the legality of the gaming compact between Florida’s government and the Seminole Tribe as third parties are upset that it was unilaterally agreed upon to effectively make the tribe a monopoly over sports betting in the state. An anti-gambling group, No Casinos, local pari-mutuel tracks, and nearby casinos have filed lawsuits in recent months. These lawsuits threaten further to halt the already delayed launch of legal sports betting in Florida.
