I enjoy reading the opinion page in The Gazette daily. Since I am at the other end of the political spectrum, I rarely agree with Adam Sullivan but his column on online poker was spot on (“ Poker is endangered in Iowa. Could online gambling save it? ” Dec. 14).

I find it hard to believe Republicans think it’s against their rights to have a mask mandate but they can tell me what I can do with my hard-earned money. Why can’t I play against thousands of other people around the world in a poker tournament?

It’s OK for grandma to spend her life savings with a credit card on E-bay or Amazon but I can’t use mine to put money on a poker site.

When the 2006 legislation passed and shut down Americans using a credit card on overseas poker sites, I had a considerable amount of money on PokerStars.com. That money was frozen by the federal government. Fortunately the Department of Justice’s phone and emails lit up and they decided to let that money go out. If the U.S. would have allowed PokerStars to operate and taxed it, it could have raised billions in the last 15 years.

Its time to legalize online poker nationwide.
