Brodie Stutzman has had a hand in creating every single one of them.
“When the nutcracker idea came around, the skills that I developed as a kid where suddenly applicable to the Nutcracker Village, and I just eventually got in charge of the area of building them,” he said.
Like most multi-million-dollar projects, it takes a village. Pun intended.
“It’s just done in stages so paint, let it dry, work on something else while it dries, gluing on this, replacing wigs. We replace a lot of wigs because they are just bedraggled, and you know just like people you get a new hair do you look really good so that’s what we do,” said Gretchen Nelson, co-owner of Nelsons.
“We’ve had to change how we make them over the years because some of the old ones have gotten damaged and we need to repair every year, so we’ve improved the process to make them more durable and weatherproof,” Stutzman said.
There will be 15 new nutcrackers added to village when it opens on Nov. 22.
“This year I’m working on Captain Nemo from 20 Leagues Under the Sea, and he’s probably my favorite of this year,” Stutzman said.
“They will be everywhere, so there will be about 26 at The Fort,” Gretchen Nelson said. “They will be at City Hall, they will be at the courthouse, they will be on Market Street on 4th Street on the green space.
