PokerStars Changes Sunday Million to Bounty Format Permanently

PokerStars’ iconic Sunday Million tournament switches to the popular progressive knockout (PKO) format on a permanent basis. “as the popularity of PKO tournaments continues to increase, [Sunday Million] will permanently switch to become a bounty tournament, beginning on June 12, 2022.” Sunday Million — the online poker industry’s most recognized weekly tournament — will be undergoing another permanent change this coming Sunday, PokerStars announced in a blog post.

Starting June 12, the long-running tournament will switch to the popular Progressive Knockout (PKO) format — something that PRO had rightly predicted about this potential move early this year.

The operator has not only changed its format but has also tweaked its structure. It increased the starting stack by five times, changed the blind levels to accommodate the more enormous stacks, switched it to 8-handed from the traditional 9-handed, adjusted the Day 1 timing, and modified both the satellites and ways of qualifying.

The buy-in remains the same (i.e., $109), retaining the cut it received more than three years ago. It also maintains two-day play and will continue to allow up to three entries per player.

“In its 16 years of existence, the Sunday Million has maintained its traditional tournament format, with occasional PKO special editions peppered throughout the year,” the operator wrote in a “blog post”:https://www.pokerstarsblog.com/en/news/iconic-pokerstars-sunday-million-becomes-permanent-progressive-knock-out-pko/79555/ published on June 7. “But now, as the popularity of PKO tournaments continues to increase, the event will permanently switch to become a bounty tournament, beginning on June 12, 2022.”
