It should come as no surprise that the advent of the internet and the rise of the popularity of poker coincided. But nowhere is this phenomenon more obvious than in Europe. People in the US take poker for granted, but it is not (or was not) the typical card game played around card tables in Minsk or Vienna. The Internet changed that. Suddenly, it was difficult NOT to play poker in Europe.
And apparently, few people objected to this new game. In fact, they took to it smoothly and effortlessly. So smooth that my job of finding the five best European poker players in history is incredibly easy.
Let’s follow the money, shall we? Let’s see what the five best European poker stars have been doing with themselves these past few years. 5. Christoph Vogelsang ($27,225,584)
First on our list of top poker players from Europe is Christoph Vogelsang. Currently living in London, Vogelsang was born in 1985 in Sassenberg, Germany, and raised on a small farm there.
Vogelsang studied economics at Witten/Herdecke University and then traveled to England to continue his studies at the London School of Economics. It was there that he first began dabbling with online poker.
Vogelsang says he started playing poker online in 2010 with a few $10 deposits and, within a matter of weeks, was playing $5000 NL cash games online. By 2013, he was proficient enough to finish third in the EPT London £50,000 Super High Roller (banking $621,321). A year later, he entered the WSOP Big One for the One Drop Foundation —and finished third (take-home pay: $4,480,001).
He topped that score in 2017 with a $6 million paycheck for winning PokerGo’s Super High Roller Bowl. Surprisingly, Vogelsang attributes his early success online to being lucky.
