When researching a list of the most famous female gamblers, it’s hard to ignore the elephant in the room. Before recent decades, women were not exactly welcomed at the gambling tables.
And still, as you’ll note, the number six lady on our list today not only made herself a place at the gambling tables but thrived there—and this was while the US was still recovering from the Civil War and the wild west was aborning.

The married, much-widowed poker player and saloon keeper known famously as Poker Alice was born Alice Ivers to Irish immigrants in Devonshire, England, in 1851.When she was 12, her family moved to Virginia, and Alice was sent to a boarding school for her education.She moved with her family to the mining town of Leadville, Colorado, in her late teens and was soon married to a mining engineer named Frank Duffield.Duffield enjoyed the game of poker, and he taught his young wife to play the game.
